Historical informations
Liège, Principality, Arnould de Hornes (1378-1389). Modern Belgium.
Gold florin with Saint Peter, n.d., Tongeren. Obv: MONETA- TONGNS' Saint Peter enthroned from left in a Gothic stall, holding a key and a cross. Below, two keys in saltire. Rev: (keys) ARNOLDVS EP'S LEODIENS Two shields side by side within a polylobe surrounded by trefoils, one with the imperial eagle and the other with a lion.
This is the only Liège gold coin minted in Tongeren, where a mint was already active in the 13th century, under Jean d'Aps and Robert de Thourotte. Jean d'Arckel reopened it for the issue of gros with a bust, of the same type as those of Liège and Maastricht (Chestret 264). The mint was still in operation under Arnould de Hornes for the production of this extremely rare gold florin. It was then permanently closed.
