The shape of this hat is based on the finds from Moschevaya Balka, North Caucasus, early Middle Ages. Such hats are also represented in the iconography of Central Asia from the same period, and sometimes decorated with metal elements on their top. These metal elements have also been found in Viking contexts, proof of the adoption of this type of hat in Scandinavian contexts (Khazar mercenary garrison at Birka among other examples)
