A few words about this fabric
This type of fabric is very common throughout Europe.
A hunting scene and a tree of life, organized symmetrically decorate medallions.This hunting scene represents a Sassanid ruler during the hunt. The motif, which has been a great success throughout Europe, has been copied and adapted many times by the byzantine workshops.
There is various copies of this silk throughout Europe: The shroud of Saint-Calais, the shroud of Saint-Cuthbert of Cologne and Saint-Ambroise of Milan present an exactly identical pattern. Only the background color varies: blue or green. A similar fabric has been used on a dress in Pskov, Russia, IXth century.
