Historical informations
The “Vuurrijzer” 2 Stuivers coin was issued in the Burgundian Netherlands under Mary of Burgundy between 1477 and 1481, during a politically turbulent period following the death of Charles the Bold. Her rule marked the transition of Burgundian territories into Habsburg control through her marriage to Maximilian of Austria. The coin’s name (“fire steel”) refers to the emblem depicted, symbolizing Burgundian identity and chivalric tradition. Struck in silver, it reflects both the economic continuity and the shifting power structures of the late medieval Low Countries.
